It might come as a surprise to you, but Blue Planet regularly gets calls for all sorts of various projects that have nothing to do with aquariums at all. Here’s a quick peek at some of my favorites:
1. Room Divider Terrarium, aka The Snakepit
This was a full rehab of a beautiful Wicker Park Chicago graystone home. The architect called us in and asked “Do you do custom snake tanks?” “Um…sure…all the time….????” was the only thing that came to mind. A tank, whatever it happens to hold, is within our scope of work and wow, this was incredible. The family pet, a 6 foot long snake, was given this room divider style terrarium and he’s been happily residing in what looks like a cross section of a rainforest for the past 7 years.
2. Turtles
Turtles, unlike snakes, we do see a lot of. Aquatic turtles in particular, and some land turtles as well. At one point we had a dozen turtle tank service clients which, when clustered together, our service techs deemed “Terrible Turtle Tuesday!”
3. I talked to an astronaut… Just sayin’.
Yep. Have you talked to an Astronaut? No? Oh… We’re still working on a project for him but it’s a plan to make an acrylic display case for a wheel used on the space shuttle Challenger. More info at: http://www.spaceportsheboygan.com/
4. Steve Wolf
Boy, that’s a great name isn’t it? No relation to yours truly but Steve Wolf makes incredible recreations of major league baseball stadiums with the finest of detail. He was featured in Ken Burns’ Public Television Special “Baseball”. We create protective covers for his models!
5. I’m totally qualified to conduct this experiment…I think?
Unfortunately I am not even allowed to discuss what the heck this is. However it incorporates super high tech computer monitoring systems as well as equipment to manipulate water temperatures at a moment’s notice. Intriguing isn’t it? Too bad, that’s all you’ll get from me!
6. Oil Tanker Mock Up
Another one I am unable to talk about, but we were hired to recreate an oil storage tank. Sorry, not much more info there, but nothing nefarious, I promise!
7. Baptismal fonts
We have been working on Baptismal Fonts since before Blue Planet was even launched. Water purification, sterilization of bacteria, and heating are imperative, and the results are pretty amazing and beautiful.
8. Lobster tanks
Like Baptismal Fonts, we have been working on lobster tanks for a long, long time in restaurant and grocery stores for service and installation.
9. Water walls
Water walls are a great feature to add to many different environments, much like aquariums are. Also like an aquarium, there are many factors to consider such as filtration, pumps, sterilization and etc.
10. Fountains
Just like water walls and aquariums, fountains take a good deal of planning to make sure water will remain crystal clear and free of odors. The results speak for themselves.
