Fish-only saltwater aquariums offer the next step up in the aquarium ladder. They offer more visual interest and a greater variety of possible inhabitants, than their freshwater counterparts, but also require a higher level of maintenance. A fish-only saltwater tank features fish as its main attraction, but uses artificial surroundings, which simplifies the aquarium ecosystem and cuts down on the required maintenance.
Many different types of saltwater fish can be kept together in “community” style aquariums. These include:
- Triggerfish
- Tangs
- Angelfish
- Pufferfish
- Butterfly fish
- Rabbitfish
- Soldier Fish
- Wrasses
- Hawkfish
- Some eels
Other saltwater fish do not get along as well with others, and require their own “species specific” tanks. Nonetheless, some owners find these species interesting enough to accommodate them and plan out aquariums with them specifically in mind:
- Octopus
- Seahorses
- Sharks
- Stingrays
- Nautalus
- Jellyfish
When planning out a “community” fish-only saltwater aquarium, consult your local aquarium professional to decide which species will work best together while still fulfilling your aesthetic goals (and your budget). Species specific aquariums will also require a specialized setup for that particular species, but for the enthusiast, the results can very well be worth it.
