New technology is continually emerging to create safer, more cost-effective equipment for aquariums. Aquarium enthusiasts and owners should be on the lookout for these exciting new products in 2016.
In the past, we have talked about energy efficiency and conversion to low voltage equipment. This trend continues to gain momentum, with some exciting new developments. The problem with low voltage pumps? These transformers mean extra cables and cords, which means more clutter. What’s better than fewer wires? No wires! We are seeing wireless conversions on wave-making pumps and main re-circulating pumps. We hear that wireless protein skimmer pumps are in the works.
Another development we saw a glimpse of in 2015 was the LED Ultraviolet Sterilizer, with more units in testing. LED lights use less energy thereby reducing energy consumption costs. Typically, fluorescent UV lights need to be replaced, on average, every 6 months. Fortunately, because LEDs do not need to be replaced as often as fluorescent UV lighting, the consumer saves on the cost of bulbs and the time to replace them.
Lastly, computer-monitoring equipment is becoming more available, affordable, and simple. When these were first introduced, offered great advantages, but were costly. Like with any technological advancements, less costly and simpler units have been developed. Everything from sensory equipment that reports information to cell phone apps or websites to submersible heaters to maintain accurate water temperature, “smart” devices are widely available and expected to grow significantly this year.
