Basic Advice

Some Tips for More Dramatic Aquarium Lighting

Are you looking for a way to “spice up” your aquarium? Dramatic lighting not only gives your aquarium an up-to-date feel, but can add depth and dimension to the surroundings for both fish and observer alike.

Blue Planet recommends LED lighting over other types of lighting. LEDs offer dramatic energy savings, a variety of colors and styles, and long lamp life. Here’s what you can do with LED lighting.

Colors

There are unlimited possibilities you can do with color and LEDs. LEDs are available in numerous color combinations. Depending on which colors you choose, you can enhance the colors on your fish and corals. You can even switch up the colors depending on the time of day. Make your yellows and oranges pop in the morning and switch to calm blues in the evening.

Doctors Foster and Smith has handy guides for both Freshwater and Saltwater aquariums to determine what color LEDs will yield what effects.

Growth

Live coral will grow under LEDs. Don’t hesitate to introduce LED lighting to your tank if you have live coral. The color combinations will be extraordinary.

Fun

Finally, programmable LED aquarium lights are available to simulate a full 24 hours of natural lighting, from sunrise to sunset and each hour in between, including moonlight conditions. You can even introduce natural weather conditions such as storm settings and cloud cover. Programmable lighting can be dimmed for additional control. Plus, many are now coming out with wi-fi capability, putting the control in the palm of your phone!
